After a brief introduction and preparations, we embark on our 4x4 vehicles, heading deep into the Afar desert towards the base camp for Erta Ale, one of the world's few continuously active lava lakes.

We'll make a stop in Afdera town, known for its salt lake, where you might even enjoy a refreshing dip in the saline waters. In the late afternoon, after an early dinner at the base camp (Dodom), we begin our trek to the rim of Erta Ale volcano. After breakfast, we drive to the lowest point of the Danakil Depression, where a kaleidoscope of colors awaits. Dallol's acidic hot springs create an alien-like environment with vibrant mineral formations in shades of yellow, green, red, and blue. You'll marvel at the bubbling pools, sulfuric acid ponds, and intricate salt structures.

We'll also visit Lake Asale (or Lake Karum), a vast and shimmering salt lake where local Afar people tirelessly carve salt slabs from the ground using traditional methods. Witnessing this ancient industry firsthand is a profound cultural experience. You can even try floating in the incredibly buoyant salt lake! In the late afternoon, we return to Hamed Ela for another night of camping under the desert sky.

After breakfast in Hamed Ela, we begin our journey back to Semera. The drive provides a final opportunity to soak in the vastness of the Danakil Depression and reflect on the incredible landscapes and cultural encounters you've experienced.

Upon arrival in Semera, depending on your flight schedule, you'll have some time to relax before being transferred to Semera Airport (SZE) for your onward journey.
